Despite the ongoing fighting in the Middle East and Israel’s air strikes on Lebanon, which threaten the fragile ceasefire agreement in the six-week-long conflict, the White House announced that the United States will hold direct talks with Iran.
Press Secretary Caroline Levitt said that Vice President JD Vance will lead the US delegation to Islamabad. The delegation members include Special Envoy Steve Wittenkoff and Jared Kushner. The first round of talks will be held on Saturday morning local time.
However, sporadic fighting continues throughout the region, including in Lebanon, where Israel has continued to launch attacks against the Iran-backed Hezbollah militia. Iranian officials say this violates the terms of the ceasefire agreement that came into effect less than a day ago.
Iran’s Foreign Minister Abbas Araqchi wrote on social media: “The terms of the ceasefire between Iran and the United States are clear and unambiguous: The United States must make a choice – either cease fire or continue waging war through Israel. It cannot have both.”
In a subsequent post, the speaker of the Iranian parliament, Mohammad Bagher Ghalibaf, referred to the fighting in Lebanon, the entry of drones into Iranian airspace and the claim that “Iran’s right to enrich uranium is denied”, and said that under such circumstances, “a bilateral ceasefire or negotiations are unreasonable”.
Iran’s continued attacks on Gulf countries have left the Strait of Hormuz largely blocked, further highlighting the fragility of the ceasefire agreement. President Donald Trump had said reopening the strait was one of the conditions for ending the fighting. Levitt on Wednesday reaffirmed that Trump wants the waterway “reopened immediately”.
Iran’s semi-official Fars news agency reported that the passage of oil tankers through the Strait of Hormuz was disrupted after the Israeli attack. But Vance refuted this claim, saying, “We see indications that the strait is reopening.”
Trump said earlier Wednesday that Lebanon was not covered by the ceasefire agreement, but he believed the military operation would not undermine the broader deal. He told PBS that Hezbollah would also “be dealt with. Everything will be fine.”
French President Emmanuel Macron condemned on social media Wednesday evening “Israel’s indiscriminate attack in Lebanon today, which has caused a large number of civilian casualties.”
