PPI Fully Exceeds Expectations, Gold Holds Steady Above Key 4150 Level

Asian equities rose as bargain hunters entered the market amid a selloff in chip stocks triggered by renewed concerns over AI trading. U.S. Treasury gains narrowed this week.

Pressure on chip stocks eased after NVIDIA CEO Jensen Huang defended the financial health of AI computing provider CoreWeave. “CoreWeave’s strength is growing every day—I’m optimistic. Their cost of capital is actually declining,” Huang said.

With the chip sell-off easing, shares of Samsung Electronics and SK Hynix both rose more than 2%. This helped the Korea Composite Stock Price Index (KOSPI) rebound 2.9%, recovering from Thursday’s sharp drop—the index had hit its lowest closing level since April.

Driven by risk aversion following volatile moves in global equity and credit markets this week, U.S. Treasuries rose on Thursday, pushing yields lower across all maturities. The benchmark 10-year Treasury yield climbed 1 basis point to 5.07%, as traders await remarks from Federal Reserve Chair Kevin Warsh.

A shift toward dovish policy from the Fed could pose significant risks for U.S. Treasuries. If signs emerge that the Fed may weaken its willingness to raise rates further this year, long-term Treasury yields could rise again due to “lagged trading.”

Yesterday’s U.S. September PPI data came in fully above expectations: core PPI annualized at 5%, non-core at 6.3%; monthly rates also accelerated, with core up 0.7% and non-core at 1.3%.
